General Assembly

Crewasis, a data science startup, needed to shift from handling everything through email to creating a user-friendly online platform. They wanted the platform to simplify their process, save time, and feel approachable, even for people unfamiliar with data science.

Goal:

The biggest challenge was building this portal from scratch while making sure it kept a good balance between helpful automation and the personal touch their clients valued.

"How might we make a simple platform that helps people trust automation, understand data science, and still feel personal and human?"

What i did:

1. Research and Strategy

Conducted user interviews with 9 executives and managers to uncover pain points and needs.
Analyzed competitors, identifying gaps and opportunities in design and user experience.
Created personas and mapped user journeys to guide design decisions.

2. Design Leadership

Facilitated a Design Studio, encouraging collaboration and creative problem-solving among stakeholders.
Developed low-fidelity sketches, progressing to mid- and high-fidelity wireframes.
Defined the user flow and "happy path" to streamline navigation and task completion.

3. Prototyping and Testing

Built the Hi-fi prototype, integrating the style guide and atomic design components.
Conducted usability testing with 7 participants, iterating designs to resolve navigation and consistency issues.
Collaborated with developers to ensure designs were feasible and aligned with technical requirements.

4. Rebranding and Presentation

Crafted the design portion of the client presentation, clearly articulating our process, insights, and solutions.
Contributed to the development of a new brand identity, including the mood board, style guide, and visual language.

What could i do better

While the project achieved many of its goals, there were areas that could have been improved:

  1. Clearer Scope Definition: Early on, there was some ambiguity around the full extent of automation expected in the MVP. A more detailed scope could have helped streamline development and avoid scope creep.

  2. More Diverse User Testing: Most usability tests focused on experienced decision-makers, but including less tech-savvy users might have revealed additional challenges and opportunities for improvement.

  3. Time Management: Some stages, like creating the style guide, took longer than anticipated, which limited time for fine-tuning the final designs.

  4. Mobile Design Exploration: While desktop functionality was prioritized, dedicating more effort to mobile usability could have prepared Crewasis for broader accessibility in the future.

  5. Enhanced Collaboration Tools: While the team worked well together, implementing more collaborative tools early in the process might have improved communication and idea-sharing.
